What causes hard water?
Hard water has a high mineral content of calcium and magnesium carbonate which is dissolved into the water as it passes through limestone and chalk. It results in the annoying build up of calcification as shown below on this shower screen door from a bathroom in Perth.
Where is it a problem in Australia?
The hardness of water in Australia is measured in parts-per million of calcium carbonate and the major cities at the higher end of the scale are:
- Adelaide: (134-148)
- Brisbane: 100
- Perth: (29-226)
It is less prevalent in these major cities but can still occur:
- Sydney: (39.4-60.1)
- Canberra: 40
- Darwin: 31
- Hobart: (5.8-34.4)
- Melbourne: (10-26)
How do you remove hard water stains on your shower screen?
Being in the shower business with our innovative range of Revolution Showers this is a question we have been asked many many times. So we have looked into it and found a simple, non-toxic way to deal with the calcification build up on your shower screen.
Firstly the ingredients needed are:
- White vinegar
- Bicarb Soda
- Lemon
- Spray bottle
- Sponge
Start off by cutting the lemon in half and sprinkle it with bicarb soda as shown below
You can now wet the shower screen surface and rub the lemon and bicarb onto the screen in a circular motion squeezing the lemon slightly as you go to release the juices. Once the screen is covered, leave for 10 minutes and then use a damp sponge to rub away the paste.
Now take the spray bottle and mix equal parts water, vinegar and lemon juice. Shake it up and spray onto the stubborn stains left behind. Leave for another 10 minutes and then wash of and rinse with clean water.
You can now take a dry towel and wipe your screen which should look sparkling clean like the one below.
Cleaning the actual shower head however can be quite a challenge. Often they are hard to reach and it involves soaking in vinegar overnight…..not a great fragrance to shower in afterwards!
So we have now developed Self-cleaning showers and would like to know your thoughts on them in our short survey here. You could even WIN one delivered to your door, good luck!
